Ethiopia: Addis Ababa, Blue Nile Gorge, Lalibela
Maya and I had two days in Addis Ababa, the capitol of Ethiopia, before Sara arrived. The first day we headed down to the Mercato to browse around and do some shopping. Enroute we stopped in at a little place with a coke sign out front and asked for some breakfast. They pointed us out back to the alley..

...to a tiny little stall where we had a tasty Ethiopian breakfast for around $0.90 US, total, including two coca-colas! Although we were a bit sketched out at first, it was a great find! Maya is laughing at me because I tried to pay $9.00, in disbelief that it could actually be so cheap. :-)

Early in the morning the streets of Addis were filled with men running and working out. Haile Gebrselassie is a celebrity here, he even has a major boulevard named after him.

I love this picture! We were driving down the road on a day trip to the Blue Nile Gorge when I looked out the window and had to ask the driver to stop. Many associate Ethiopia with famine and starvation, but this picture of lush farmland is in reality a more common sight.

En route to the Blue Nile Gorge we stopped off at the so called "16th-century Portuguese Bridge," which oddly enough was actually constructed in the late 1800s. Watch out below, I'm going to jump!! Not really.

This is the long lane that takes us from the main road to the monastery of Debre Libanos, founded in the 13th century.

In order to enter the church, two conditions had to be met. The deacon asked me if Maya and I had met these two conditions. I didn't know, and I certainly wasn't about to ask, so I just said "OK" authoritatively. He was free to interpret that as he wished. :-)

The original church had been destroyed in the Muslim-Christian wars. This current church was built in 1961 by Haile Selassie.

The stained glass windows were beautiful from inside the dark church.
